Good MorningJanuary 2025 NewsletterHow You Start Your Day - Focus on the process not the outcome.Reading time 5 minutes
Good morning and happy new year everyone.
It’s a new year and a blank canvas awaits your first stroke. Here’s the thing… the masterpiece you’re going to create isn’t painted in one grand sweep.
The brushstrokes of each morning, those first few moments, truly define what’s possible.
You know how I like to tell stories to spread my message?
Well, let me tell you a story about Abby.
Abby spent years dreading her mornings. Every day was the same: wake up late, rush to get ready, grab a coffee she didn’t have time to enjoy and head into a job she hated.
It felt like her life was on repeat, and every new year was just another page in the same old worn-out script. One January morning, Abby tried something different. Instead of focusing on the overwhelming desire to escape her job, she decided to focus on her mornings.
She decided to change things around and focus on the process, not the outcome. She started by waking up 20 minutes earlier.
Then sitting quietly with a cup of coffee.
She wrote down three small things she could do to make her day better. Things as simple as taking a 10-minute walk at lunch. Other days, it was exploring a new skill she’d been curious about. Fast forward six months, and Abby’s mornings didn’t just change her days—they changed her outlook.
She still didn’t love her job, but her mornings gave her the power to own her time, her mindset, and her life. Why the Process Matters More Than the OutcomeMany people view the new year as a time to set big goals. While there’s nothing wrong with ambition, focusing solely on the outcome can be overwhelming.
Think about it:
How many times have you set a New Year’s resolution, only to give up because the goal felt too far away? It’s because focusing on the outcome makes us feel like we’re failing until we’ve reached the finish line.
However, when you focus on the process, everything changes.
Every small step feels like a victory. You’re not waiting to succeed; you’re succeeding right now, simply by showing up and doing the work. How You Start Your Day: A Process That Works
When you’re stuck in a job you hate, mornings can feel heavy, like the start of a marathon you didn’t sign up for. They can also be an opportunity. An opportunity to reclaim control over your time and mindset. Here’s how to build a morning routine that focuses on the process, not the outcome: Wake Up With IntentionDon’t hit snooze. Instead, use those first few minutes to set a tone of calm and purpose. You don’t need to meditate for an hour—just 5 or 10 minutes is all you need. Take a few deep breaths. Breathe from your belly. Get the diaphragm working. Remind yourself that this day is yours to shape. Move Your BodyMovement clears the fog of sleep and energizes you for the day ahead. It doesn’t have to be intense. A five-minute stretch or a quick walk around the block can work wonders. The goal isn’t to get fit in one day—it’s to wake up your body and mind. Increase it each week. Take it in easy bite-size chunks. Journal Your ThoughtsTake a few minutes to jot down your thoughts, goals, or even your frustrations. Writing is a powerful way to process emotions and gain clarity.
Be sure you write in a notebook, do not type into a laptop or tablet.
End with one simple intention for the day—something small, like “be kind to me” or “try something new at lunch.” If you are not clear on anything here you can contact me personally. Read a chapter of a book, watch a short video on your cell phone, a topic you’re curious about, or spend time on a creative hobby.
These small actions remind you that you’re more than your job and that each day is an opportunity to grow. Celebrate Small WinsBefore you start your day, acknowledge the effort you’ve already made. Whether it’s getting out of bed on time or completing your morning routine, give yourself credit for showing up. The Power of a New Year
January feels like a giant reset button, but the truth is, every single morning is a chance to start fresh. You don’t have to wait for your circumstances to change or your dream job to appear.
The process of starting your day with intention can transform your perspective, ease the burden of hating your job, and help you rediscover the joy in life’s small moments.
By focusing on the process, you create space for new opportunities. Maybe it’s the courage to apply for a different role. Maybe it’s the energy to pursue a side hustle. Maybe it’s simply the ability to face your current situation with more resilience and hope. A Positive Note to Carry ForwardAs we step into 2025, I want you to remember this: life isn’t about waiting for the perfect outcome. It’s about creating moments that matter, one morning at a time.
You might not love your job right now, but you can love the way you start your day.
You can choose to focus on what’s in your control—the process.
When you show up for yourself consistently, the outcomes start to take care of themselves.
So tomorrow morning, take a deep breath and remind yourself:
This is my time. I get to decide how it begins. Every sunrise is a chance to begin again, and you’ve got 365 of them waiting for you this year. Make them count. Until next month
