Good MorningNovember 2024 NewsletterEyes off the Scoreboard - Focus on the ProcessReading time 3 minutes Your goals are exciting. I get it. It is what my book was about. (“Ink Your Future”, I hope you all took the opportunity to download it). I received some great feedback, all good, thanks.
From guys that have set goals to change the job they hate, to ones making plans to start their own business. But here’s something to consider, something to ponder going forward.
Your goal is exciting. Yes, they offer a clear endpoint, something tangible to work toward. However, beware of the seduction of the scoreboard. When you fixate on the goal, you risk losing sight of what matters - the process. The process is where the magic happens. It’s the daily grind, the habits you form, the decisions you make. This consistent effort, this discipline, these actions - they’re what will determine your success. Guaranteed.
Think of it like tending a garden. You don’t grow a garden by focusing on the harvest. Yes, you see what it will look like, a picture of the exact layout, colors and blooms.
This is not going to achieve it. What creates the success of your goal is showing up every day, watering the plants, nurturing the soil.
The harvest takes care of itself when you take care of the process.
So, by shifting your focus from the outcome to the process, you have control. You can’t always control when the results come, but you can always control the effort you put in, the strategies you follow, and the mindset you bring.
The process keeps you grounded in the present moment, making progress step by step. It reduces anxiety by keeping you focused on what you can do today, not what might happen in the future. Take your eye off the scoreboard and focus on the game plan, the process.
The process also helps you build momentum. Small, consistent actions compound over time, creating gradual improvements that add up to big wins.
Embracing the process teaches you to love the journey. You become less concerned with hitting the target and more invested in enjoying the ride.
The goal becomes a natural consequence of your commitment, not a desperate pursuit. When setbacks inevitably occur, the process builds your resilience. Failure is no longer catastrophic, but an opportunity to refine, learn, and grow.
So, set your goal, then shelve it. Well, not literally. It should be prominent in your mind or a photo on a mirror. You know what I mean it is in the book. If you only have the goal, it is a dream and a wish without the process of how to achieve it.
Make your daily actions the metric for success. Track your habits, not your results. Celebrate the effort, not just the achievement. Find the ‘buzz’ in doing the work. The scoreboard will always reflect your efforts.
So, keep your head down, trust the process, and let your work do the talking.
Success is a marathon, not a sprint. Embrace the journey, and the destination will take care of itself.
Keep your eye off the scoreboard and focus on the process.
