In a world of endless possibilities and fierce competition, there's one question that separates success from the rest: "What business are we in?"
I am relating this story from a client to whom I was privileged to mentor over the last 10 years. I constantly asked him to tell me what business he is in. This is his story.
“It's been quite a journey, a whirlwind of ups and downs, as I reflect on the past 10 years of running my own business.
As a 45 year old, I find myself constantly coming back to the fundamental question Daryl guided me throughout this incredible adventure: It’s never one thing but it was this question that kept me basically ‘on the ball’. The question Daryl posed to me was, "What business are we in?"
This seemingly simple question holds the key to focus, productivity, and the unwavering pursuit of my dreams. Join me as I take you through the story of my business, the challenges I faced, and the unyielding motivation that keeps me going.
A decade ago, I embarked on an entrepreneurial journey filled with equal parts excitement and trepidation.
Armed with nothing but an idea and the burning desire to bring it to life, I ventured into the unknown.
The business I envisioned was centered around transforming people's lives through immersive virtual reality experiences.
Little did I know this path would not only challenge my resilience but also bring immense joy and satisfaction along the way.
Let's talk about the elephant in the room: the hardships.
It would be dishonest of me to paint an entirely rosy picture without acknowledging the countless obstacles I encountered on this journey.
There were times when it seemed like everything was conspiring against me. Economic downturns, fierce competition, and even a global pandemic shook the very foundations of my business.
But let me tell you a secret—I embraced these hardships as opportunities. Instead of viewing them as roadblocks, I saw them as catalysts for growth and innovation.
Every setback became a stepping stone toward success. It was during those tough times I truly understood the importance of Dayl’s mentorship by getting me to ask myself, "What business are we in?"

In the face of adversity, I realized answering this question was not just about defining my company's niche or industry. It went much deeper than that. "What business are we in?" forced me to examine my core values, my purpose, and the impact I wanted to make in the world. It guided my decisions, kept me focused, and fueled my passion.
Whenever doubts crept in or motivation wavered, I would close my eyes and visualize my dream—the dream of creating unforgettable virtual reality experiences that would transport people to unimaginable worlds. I had fun using my imagination, seeing the smiles on their faces, and feeling the exhilaration of turning dreams into reality.
As the years rolled by, my business grew and expanded in ways I had never anticipated. New opportunities arose, partnerships formed, and my team expanded. Yet, amidst all the success, I never forgot to come back to the basics. I made it a habit to regularly re-evaluate and remind myself of the core question: “What business are we in?”
This constant examination propelled me forward. It served as a compass, guiding my decision-making process and ensuring that I never lost sight of my dream. It kept me motivated, excited, and aligned with the essence of my business.
Today, as I celebrate a decade of entrepreneurship, I can proudly say that my dream has become a thriving reality. The challenges I faced no longer haunt me; instead, they serve as reminders of my resilience and the unwavering spirit of an entrepreneur. But even now, I ask myself the question that has been my guiding light: “What business are we in?”
I share this story with young men and women because I want them to understand the importance of focus and staying true to their dreams. The road to success may be paved with obstacles, but by continuously examining their businesses and asking themselves what business they are in, they will find the motivation and excitement to push forward.

I can never repay Mentoraus and Daryl in particular for the amazing guidance and support he gave me over the last 10 years. Yes, I did the work and went the extra mile, but without his mentorship, I really believe I would not be where I am now. The best investment I have ever made by light years.”
