Where are you?

Where are you right now? Are you lost or don’t quite know what path to take? It’s a good idea to establish where you are right now. I know this sounds dumb, but many when stating your business miss this simple action point.

First up establish where the hell you are.

don't send your self crazy. Build a plan of action.Don't send yourself crazy. Find out where you are. Map out a plan to get where you want to go.

You have probably looked at the town map or a mall site map sometime somewhere in your travels that shows the position of where you are right now. Usually with a large dot or an arrow showing with the notation ‘YOU ARE HERE!’. Now you know where you are, and you want to go here or there. The map points you in the right direction.

You are probably wondering about the heading, The Fugarwee Tribe. A recently discovered African tribe.

They are a pygmy race about 3 feet tall. They live in the grasslands bordering the Savannah. The thing is, the grass is 4 feet tall. So, to find their way around, they continually jump to get a clear view of where they are. As they jump, they are heard to scream, "Where the fugarwee?" So, they were named the Fugarwee Tribe. Boom boom.

The FugarweeA typical member of the Fugarwee Tribe.

It is the same deal when you are thinking about starting a business. Work out, 'where are you', right now. Before you start. Give this a lot of thought. Analyze it until you know exactly what position you are in.

Find out with precision like a guided missile locked on to  a target. Got it? Lock it in. Locked and loaded. Now go ‘chunk’ it. Chunk the path of the journey into tiny little steps to a point somewhere in the future. A point in time. A point of excitement.

Dare to dream, because this is exciting stuff.

If it doesn’t excite you, maybe you should not give up your day job. Make amends to the boss and your work colleagues because you are not going anywhere soon. Leave this website now.

OK, still here? Then let’s work out 'where are you' and where you want to go. It’s a cinch by the inch, hard by the yard.

Step by step - map your progress. Look at the next target. Chunk it, keep chunking. Become a master ‘Chunker’. Maybe you can get a degree at “chunkers” university. Bachelor of Chunking. BC designation. Maybe if you are really really great at it, you might get ‘Hons’ after it. I digress. No harm in having a little fun.

Everything is hard before it gets easy

Keep a journal of all that you have done. Remember to keep records. Record everything. This is what you will refer to. Every time you work on your business, record it in your notepad and date it. This will become your business ideas guidebook. Your business action plan. This is the Holy Grail. Keep building on it. Soon you will see a pattern. You will quickly see a path ahead. What the future might look like for you and your business startup.

You will see what works and what does not.

It is a great business idea to use this simple method of keeping records in all facets of your business. As your business grows, you will see what is taking your time. There may be an occasion to let someone else do it. You will notice actions that are reoccurring. Maybe a junior staffer might handle these. If you are starting out with not too much capital, it might be a good odd job for the kids to do to earn pocket money. Keep recording. Don’t give up.

This is record-keeping journaling for success. I’ll have more to say about journaling and in particular record keeping on another page, which I believe is a major key to becoming a very successful business owner and starting a successful business to drive your future. It does not matter what the business is.

When you have established 'where are you' and have a plan documented to where you want to be in one year, five years, and possibly ten years, you are on your way. It’s not set in stone. Quite the contrary. The plan needs to be flexible and you will adjust it to your situation as time goes by. At least you have a plan. You are ahead of the pack already.

Re-establish your business

Stop now and then and re-establish your business and ask, “Where am I?”. Establish again 'where are you' right now.

90% of startups fail because they do not have a well-thought-out plan of action. Do not be one of these.

To increase your chances of succeeding when you start your business get yourself a business mentor. If you read more of this website, you will see I bang on about this constantly. It does not have to be me, but I urge you before you get too far into your journey to get yourself a mentor. Make sure the mentor has the experience and not a certification or degree from a college. Not worth the paper it’s written on. All theory and no practical experience.

Mentoraus is an experienced business mentor. Read my ‘about me’ page.

The best initial investment you can make

A mentor is probably the best initial investment you can make to give you and the business the best chance of success.

Take action.Know the way forward. Get a guide. Get a business mentor.

When you know where you are and have established where you want to be, the next step is to invest in a mentor. If you want to research this, a good place to start is in the forums for business startups. The one thing I notice was the overwhelming majority wished they had used the services of a mentor earlier than later. Again, this is an investment, not an expense. In most counties, it is a tax deduction.

The part of knowing where you are and where are you going is getting a mentor.

A significant investment in your future.

If you were visiting a country as a tourist, what would you do? You would save time and get yourself a guide. An experienced guide to take you to the sights and places you have heard about. The guide might cost you a service fee, but one thing is for sure: it will save you time and stop you from going around in circles. Stop you from exhaustion. Also, you would have got to see the most interesting places and more than you imagined. All because you took the time to get a guide.

What is the difference in starting your business

Nothing. The same thing. An investment in time. A significant investment in your future. You will get to the places you want to get to, faster. You are giving yourself the best chance of succeeding in your startup.

How do I know all this stuff?

Because I’ve done it. Over 35 years in business. Thirty-five years with the same mentor. Did it make a difference? You cannot believe what a difference it made. Think $9 million difference. All verifiable.

Now I am paying it forward. I love business. Doesn’t matter what your business is. Business is business.

All businesses have the same fundamentals. Revenue-Expenses=Net Profit.

It has been this way and always will be. Nothing changes, only the numbers.

Summary.

Establish where you are. Evaluate where you want to be. Then start your business by first getting yourself a mentor to guide you forward.

Go you good thing.

Where are you right now?

Experience isn't the best teacher, experience is the only teacher.
